Optical/RF Communications Engineer

Job Description

Support the development of free space optical communication systems via software and algorithm development, laboratory testing, and field testing.

Duties: Assist in ongoing research and development activities in the development of prototype systems for optical communications systems.

Develop software and algorithms for control, signal processing, and error correction for free space optical communication systems. Implement those algorithms in hardware, such as microcontrollers and FPGAs.

Support laboratory testing and field testing of prototype communication systems.

Document task results via memoranda, briefings, conference proceedings, or journal articles.

Job Requirements

  B.S. or M.S. in physics or electrical engineering with emphasis in communications, signal processing, and/or fiber optics. Interest or experience with developing and testing laboratory prototypes.

Skilled with using programming languages (e.g. Matlab, LabView, and/or C) to analyze data or model system performance. Must be interested in learning to develop and implement processing and control algorithms in hardware such as microcontrollers and FPGAs. Must be able to work effectively as part of a team. Strong verbal, presentation and written skills.

Desired: Ph.D. in physics or electrical engineering with emphasis in communication systems. Experience with a range of optical and RF test and measurement equipment, laboratory prototyping tools and RF and photonic system design tools is highly desired. Experience in implementing error correction and DSP algorithms in FPGA hardware.
