Optical Fiber Engineer - Prototyping & Design

Job Description

Design fiber management and layout of fiber laser prototypes. Design mechanical and thermal layout of fiber laser prototypes.  Assemble, test and deliver these prototypes. Support development and prototyping of optical fiber devices and assemblies.  Candidates are expected to work very closely with a principal investigator in the research, development and prototyping of complex assemblies.  Tasks include fiber splicing, fiber layout and management, thermal management, electronic and software controls and interfaces, and device testing and qualification.  The fiber devices may include optical technologies such as fiber Bragg grating, optical amplification, optical nonlinearities, and control of optical dispersion and polarization.  The end goal of the project is to produce packaged prototypes for delivery to external customers for testing. 

Job requirements

Experience in designing and layout of fiber laser prototypes. Conduct optical experimentation and testing with minimal supervision.  Must be skilled in fiber optic splicing, fiber layout and protoyping. Experience in handling and assembly of fiber and optoelectronic devices. Programming in LabView, and basic machining skills are a plus.  Prefer BS or MS in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Optics Mechanical Engineering or Materials Science.
